History Of Hypnosis

Firstly a very very brief history of Hypnosis.

Hypnosis is not new. It can be traced back to ancient Greece and Egypt when sleep temples were used to induce dreams and analyze them to get to the answers. Trance can be traced back to 1500 BC and before!

Modern Hypnosis started with Franz Mesmer (1734-1815). He was an Austrian Physician. Mesmerism, the early name for Hypnosis, was based on his name. He developed a theory that "animal magnetism" was the system working in the body and that blockages to the flow caused the problems! He was a brilliant man, but his processes were very slow, although he did get results.

Then James Braid (1795-1860), a Scottish eye doctor, developed an interest in Mesmerism and eventually' after much study and research' proposed it should be called Hypnotism, after 'Hypnos' which is the Greek word for sleep.

Meanwhile a British surgeon in India, James Esdaile (1808-1859) recognized the benefits of Hypnosis or pain relief in surgery and used it very successfully for anaesthesia in over two hundred operations. When he returned to England, the Doctors all laughed at him and said they would rather use the new chemical anaesthetics which they could control and of course charge more money for.

Over the years many, people from doctors to scientists have worked on Hypnosis. Hypnosis is not trying to compete with medicine in any way but - it is now accepted as a very effective complimentary service.

Hypnosis is much more accepted now. The National Health Service has a hospital department that uses Hypnosis for treating Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). This was shown on Television in 2008. Their techniques are a bit dated, but it was good to see. Many dentists use Hypnosis for very nervous clients. Doctors & Dentists have their own Hypnotherapy association.

It is good to see how many more people, doctors included, that are becoming more aware of hypnotherapy and the benefits it has - and with no unwanted side effects. I am also pleased to say that I have, for some time, had doctors recommending their patients to me. In some cases, they even come to see me themselves.
